Thyme came to us from the Mediterranean countries during the eleventh century and the cultivated form, grown mainly in our gardens, is known as Garden Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) sometimes as Mother Thyme.
Outside of cooking, it is typically used in teas, tinctures, bath soaks, and mouth wash/gargles. One of its main constituents, thymol, is an antioxidant that has been connected with helping to reduce coughs and congestion associated with bronchitis and other chest and respiratory problems. In addition, thyme has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against several different bacteria and fungi, Thyme is high in Vitamin K but also contains a significant amount of iron and manganese.
